Our little family was hiking today once again. During our last trip in the Pfengstbach valley we noticed the hiking trails of the „Bergisches Wanderland“. We are always looking for interesting hiking areas and especially trails for family excursions. Today we tried one of the round strolls from the Bergisches Wanderland. We picked the the Mining Trail in Hoffnungsthal.
Our stroll started at the train station of Hoffnungsthal. At the beginning we followed the trail along the creek Sülz. The trail would have led us to the old mayors office, but missed one path marking and ended up making a slight detour. After following the path across the village Hoffnungsthal for about half an hour we entered the woods. We went along along a very old path that has been used by miners since medieval times. We came along the mining tower of the shaft „Franziska“ were we intended to stop for lunch. At the shaft was an information were one could create electricity by winding a crank. With that electricity one is able power a small speakerbox that plays either a traditional song of miners or tells a local fairy tale.
After lunch break we set for the next section. We walked around a big earth dump and came along the local golfing club. At that place you could see the tallest of all the shaft towers in this area. At his point we already had walked the first half of this hiking trail.
We headed for our return. The already mentioned earth dump was a bit disturbing. If you go hiking in the woods you go there there for being in the nature and not for walking along construction sites. After the earth dump was behind us the path was a bit more what we expected. We have been walking through several small settlements, forests and fields. This was the best part of this stroll. As usual Asuka-Lena fell asleep prior our arrival at the train station. As we arrived back at our car all had some onigiris as snack
From new year on we intend to have at least one family stroll together per month. The list of possible hiking trails in the near area of Cologne is almost endless. For today we finished the first stroll within the hiking area of the „Bergisches Wanderland“. 23 more strolls will follow soon.

On Fat Thursday we usually visit friends for having breakfeast together and celebrating Carnival in the streets of Cologne. This year we joined our friends disguised as Captain Redbeard, Lady Tsunami and Parrot Leni.
Carnival is very popular even among the children of the japanese toddler group. Animal costumes were very popular this year.
The Shrove Monday procession is the climax of the Cologne Carnival. Since we had so much fun last year it was no question for us to attend the procession this year as well. Our little parrot was very successful when it comes to collecting candy. Together with Nara she stood in the first row and many guardsmen of the „Rote Funken“ and „Blaue Funken“ presented her candy, chocolate and flowers. Gathering loot can be very exhausting. As Parrot Leni got tired the „Rolling Dutchmen“ set sail for our home port.
